another little girl (little spiders)
I think I’ll call this one Edna….
Just for clarification, these are comparative photos of one sculpture (I did not make a whole bunch of identical copies…

I liked the first one so much, I had to re-do the same patina…
I like this one too….. It hangs nicely, and comes off quite menacing. the thread she is hanging from is a 1/16th stainless steel cable, and is securely looped inside her cephalothorax.

I’ll keep working on ‘em…
stay tuned….

I find it absolutely fascinating that you managed to make the idea of the “big spider” even more menacing by making her “smaller.” The big spider is terrifying but in a surreal way–the little one, more so because she’s closer to the plausible… I love your perspective of toying with fear–it’s not always the big things that are the scariest-the little things, the intimate things, that sneak up on us can seem far more dangerous. The finish on this piece is absolutely gorgeous. She’s sinister yet beautifully provocative-the irony is sublime-now that’s what art is all about. Bravo Jon. Edna is a beauty!

thanks for the comment, Ame. I think i like the black finish too much to change anything on the last two. If I were going to do any other finish, I would probably chrome one of them. It would be a polishing nightmare, but would look super cool. Bringing more of a machine-metal-menace to the piece.

Your work is amazing. I was doing a search hoping to find something that didn’t make spiders look goofy or funny and your site popped up. I am blown away. I am in love with Edna. I like the way you dealt with your arachnophobia by transforming the beast of your fear into a thing of beauty. I used to have a horrible fear of spiders. When I was four I had a recurring problem where I would wake up and a spider would be on my face. I would lay frozen in fear until my Mom came in to wake me and would knock it off my face. I used to think they had it out for me.
But now I love em. It was a journey. How much would an Edna go for? For that matter any of them, though I know the Big Momma is out of my league. Could you send me an e-mail and let me know?
Thanx.
