Mere is a meditation on motherhood, mere being at once the french word for mother, is also closely related to the latin root for sea. (think MERmaids, MARine, MARitime...) A mother (cow) humpback whale and her calf float above a rusted steel pyramid / pillar, encircled by a looping ring form that at once connects and confines them. The ring emanates from her womb, and picks up speed and upward momentum, to connect to the energetic and playful trejectory of the playful calf. The piece is inspired by the observed family bond that exist in humpback societies, The cows endure long gestation periods, and raise their calves for many years, teaching them many complex behaviors and languages, forming lasting family bonds that allow pods to survive and flourish as they travel thousand of miles across the vast oceans.
