The legend of the mermaid pervades just about every seafaring culture on the globe. We have become used to a friendlier Disney version of lovable, singing mermaids, but the longer story is different. All the way back before the sirens of the Odyssey, legends speak of fierce, dangerous creatures, who had as much power for destruction as they did love. There are stories of mermaids that were so intrigued and enamored by drowning sailors, they would try to take them home (forgetting that we humans cannot breathe underwater) or drown them intentionally, out of rage. She is my portrayal of that duality: a fiercely feminine presence, sleek and strong, holding the power of siren and predator in her webbed hands.
